and my photography story really starts in 2021. My partner took me to Alaska in a surprise trip for my 50th to see the Northern Lights. I wanted to capture the lights, if we saw them, and knew enough that I needed to take my "real" camera for long exposure. So I hunted around for my old DSLR, made sure it worked, and packed it, the charger, a memory card and off we went.
It was stunning, the images barely do it justice (see below), let alone words. And through that experience (ohh and seeing a moose!), it re-ignited a passion, a love of photography, capturing magical moments in time.
When I returned to Atlanta I bought myself a new camera for my 50th and proceeded to take pictures of birds and bees and trees and buildings and landscapes. I was happyish. And if you had asked me in May of 2021, "Brian, what don't you want to take pictures of?" my response would have been a resounding "people!"
The thought of model shoots, portraits, and events had ZERO appeal. And then I met Eddie and Judy. Purely by coincidence (but they say there are no coincidences right?). They are amazing professional photographers and needed an assistant for a model shoot. I hemmed and hawed. My better half convinced me to do it. He said, "you might like it" to which I scoffed.
Well, he was right. Since June of 2021 I can't stop thinking about taking pictures of people. Yes, I still love a pic of a bee or a beaver or a tree or building, but my heart fills with joy when I can capture the emotion of an event or the personality of the person. As one of my clients said, "you captured their humanity" and that made my heart sing.
Since then, I have upgraded equipment, taken classes, listened, asked questions, taken on challenging projects, put myself in uncomfortable settings, and have found amazing mentors around the country (yes I still help Eddie and Judy, they are quite frankly two of the most amazing people I have ever met.)
I am continuing to grow and learn and looking forward to it all. Shooting new people in new spaces with new ideas!
Now, you know a bit about me. Drop me a note and let me know a bit about you!
Be sure to take a few minutes today and enjoy what is happening around you, be kind to a stranger, and make it an absolutely amazing day!
